Test shot of a dungeoneer with helmet in the Dragon Room from Series 2 of Knightmare (1988)

Promotional Press Pack from 1988

By Keith McDonald

A promotional press pack for the second series of Knightmare, published by the Anglia Television Press Office in 1988.

This short brochure demonstrates how Anglia Television promoted the show in its early seasons.

The branding is a dripping black and red Knightmare logo against a speckled red background. That is consistent with the computer games released at the time.

The first page of the 1988 press pack. Features a spectre of Treguard addressing a dungeoneer, plus additional photos.

The press pack features some familiar test imagery, with dungeoneers superimposed onto the Dragon Room and the Skeleton Room created by illustrator David Rowe.

The second page of the 1988 press pack brochure. Features a centre spread of a dungeoneer in the Dragon Room, plus some behind-the-scenes shots of Tim Child and Robert Harris.

There are some less familiar glimpses of the behind-the-scenes activities.

These include 'computer wizard' Robert Harris of the Travelling Matte Company preparing the graphical display.

We also see Tim Child in conversation with director Sally Freeman in the 'control gallery'.

The final page contains the credits and a cast gallery of the nine actors.

We are grateful to Jason Karl, winning Series 2 dungeoneer, for providing this pack. Jason is shown on the front page with Hugo Myatt as Treguard the Dungeon Master.

Knightmare is a unique television experience for youngsters who enjoy a challenge.

It's a problem-solving adventure game in a knights-of-old setting created by some of television's most advanced production techniques.

Each programme in the 16-week series opens the door to a fantastic world of dungeons, castles and caverns generated on the TV screen by three powerful computers.

Into the illusory labyrinth steps a Dungeoneer, blindfolded by a 'Helmet of Justice' and guided by three team-mates who remain outside the Dungeon door and watch through a 'Magic Mirror'. Their mentor is the noble Treguard, Master of the Dungeon.

Each new adventure brings contestants face to face with the weird and wonderful characters who dwell in the computerised catacombs - some helpful and some hostile to their cause.

The key to success is survival, and the only way is onward. There is no turning back…
