Team 7: Neil, Craig, Jason and Mark from Newark.
The seventh quest of Series 2 was for the Crown and lasted 34 minutes.
Level 1
Folly advises Neil to "follow the Sword", providing a further hint about a red king.
Into a bomb room. The team ponders whether to collect food, which almost costs Neil dearly.
He is then almost hit by a snake but suffers no life force damage.
The Level 1 clues are guarded by Granitas. Despite scoring just one, they earn a clue: "the dagger may be used, but not against flesh".
They take the dagger and a potion, leaving a bone.
In the Card Room, they follow Folly's advice to take the King.
Mildread impersonates the advisors and tries to guide Neil out through the door. The advisors are wise to it.
Treguard: "If she wanted Neil to go through that door, you can be sure there was something really nasty waiting on the other side."
Neil gives Mildread a potion for her cooking pot. In return, she gives him a word: STALACTITE.
The wellway is guarded by a cavernwraith. Treguard notes that it has no flesh.
Neil holds up the dagger, which makes the wraith disappear.
Level 2
Neil arrives at a room with five doors, all bearing symbols.
Treguard: "Here is the crossroads where many different adventures meet for a short moment in space and time."
The team continues to follow the Sword.
Into the Level 2 clue room. Neil retrieves a key from a carcass on the table.
Mogdred is waiting in the Vale. He overpowers Treguard in the antechamber.
Mogdred: "This is far too easy..."
The sorcerer spell-casts SHROUD, which makes Neil invisible. The team immediately tries to dispel it, but advisor Mark keeps omitting the letter 'O'.
Eventually, Treguard mumbles a clue, and they realise their mistake. Mogdred shrieks and retreats.
The team handles Combat Chess very well, collecting a sprite of energy along the way.
They then negotiate the Corridor of Spears successfully.
The first piece of the sword is in Ariadne's lair. Neil collects it before escaping through the left-hand door.
Into Merlin's Chamber. Treguard hints that they should open a bottle.
Treguard: "Those who don't open things risk ignorance."
Merlin appears in mid-air, so Neil must guide him down. They earn a clue after answering two riddles correctly.
Merlin: "When you meet your own monster, take the first left to escape."
Neil uses the key from the clue room to escape the locked exit.
Into the mine. Bumptious emerges from behind the cart.
Neil gets only one of his three questions, but pledges "never to rob a dwarf". Bumptious rewards him.
Bumptious: You're going to need a SHOVEL, but it's not for digging with.
Into the Corridor of the Catacombs, where a reptilian monster is on guard. Following Merlin's warning, they take the left exit.
Death
The Level 2 wellway is guarded by Cedric. He refuses 'Stalactite' as the password, so they attempt magic.
Again, they get it wrong, attempting to spell-cast SPADE instead of SHOVEL. Cedric loses patience and smites Neil with his quarterstaff.
Cedric: "Then perish, toad-features!"
Treguard: "You've dealt yourself out, team, by failing to deal with magic."
Hear from the team
In February 2004, advisor Jason Bond signed the guestbook.
I was on the show in 1988. This site has bought back so many good memories of those days when I was only 14, I'm 29 now. Good site!
See a certificate
Laura Ashley, sister of one of the advisors, sent us a photo of Jason and Craig with one of their certificates.
