My theory is that Atlantis' popularity is largely down to viewers being in a vegetative state by the end of Strictly Come Dancing. I have been a devotee of classical mythology for a long time, and of all the interpretations I've read and seen, Atlantis has made me most embarrassed to be one. In my opinion, it doesn't deserve to be as successful as Merlin because it's inferior in every way. And I still want to know why Jason didn't encounter a language barrier when he arrived on Atlantis (sorry,
at Atlantis: it's a mainland settlement now, isn't it?)
At its best, I find Atlantis mildly entertaining, and I was surprised by one of the twists in the Series 1 finale. I too was pleased at Minos' recovery - I like Alexander Siddig - though even if he had died, he could have continued in the series as a judge of souls in the Underworld, as per the mythology.
A happy ending for Heracles (it was the Romans who called him Hercules) and Medusa would annoy me. I'd rather see her suffer the same fate as she did in the myth: decapitation followed by a winged horse springing from her blood. I'm not sick, I'm just a purist.
