(not sure where to put this, move as you wish)
The CITV home from 1983-1996 came from the so-called "ATV Centre" building, on Broad Street in Birmingham. Built in 1969, it was to house the new broadcast centre for Midlands broadcaster ATV in preparation for the new UHF 625line transmission system, still in use today and planned to be switched off by 2010 in the move to Digital TV.
ATV Centre was home to the original version of Crossroads and the broadcast centre of ATV to 1982, and Central Television up until 1996. From 1983 it was also used for Children's ITV, with live "inbetweeny-bits" between programmes from 1987.
Carlton Television, in 1994, bought out Central TV and then in 1996 did some relocating - moved out of Broad Street and ATV Centre, to Gas Street where they remain today, although filming is now done in Nottingham. ATV Centre had all its equipment and accessories and stuff sold off and was then boarded up, where it has stood empty since 1996.
With the advent of the the new plan to redevelopment Birmingham, it has been on the cards for a long time - indeed, a certain "Carlton Communications" is one of the partners in the "Arena Central" development, which includes knocking down the 1970-built studio
complex. It's part of Birmingham Council's planned revamp of the town, which
is explored in great detail at "Transdiffusion"'s

Re: Old CITV Home To Be Demolished
Birmingham's a sorry state and take it from someone who goes there every 2 weeks at least (although it's been every week recently!) due to the redevelopment plan.
I mean I can't really speak for what it looks like in daytime (I always go through it at night and from Bex' window one can only see Walsall) but in the evening it's a grotty city with roadworks all the way through it, dirty bridges and big abandoned buildings with signs hanging off them saying "Birmingham Redevelopment Program" and stuff.
Hmmm... I wonder what it's like in the daytime. If I can ever be arsed I'll go there one day to see what it's like...
...it has quite a few adult clubs...
...but until then, yes.
Knock it down.
....
It's better than London though.
