Knightmare Gamebook Playthroughs

By David Goldstein

Knightmare gamebooks 1 and 2 have been played interactively by fans on YouTube.

The gamebook section of the second Knightmare book, The Labyrinths of Fear by Dave Morris, offers a rich variety of paths through the dungeons, with just a few leading to ultimate victory.

In 2012, YouTube user Mike Rants (also of Areashiftybun) gave watchers the chance to play The Labyrinths of Fear interactively via YouTube videos by reading a passage of the gamebook and taking votes on what decision should be made.

Two years later, the idea has been independently revisited - in livestream form. Gameplay Jenny read from The Labyrinths of Fear gamebook (which was never named in the video) while Zeke Iddon and Julia took real-time suggestions from watchers as to what choices to make at each juncture.

Visibly enthused about both the adventure and Knightmare, their responses to hearing Ed Welch's Knightmare theme at the start and end are, may I say, heartwarming. There's a cat too.

This was followed a week later by playthroughs of the first Knightmare gamebook which can also be found on Zeke's channel. If you'd like to see this remain a regular thing, please let Zeke know!

Don't forget (as if you would) that YouTube is also the home of the episode of Knightmare made for last year's Geek Week.
