The International Knightmare Phrase Book

Post by Ironlord »

I must be mad. Bizarre thoughts about how well Knightmare would take off in Finland if it was ever translated into Finnish (was it? Who knows - snowwiewolf seems to have dropped off the face of the planet) led me to this crackpot idea.

I'm hoping to build up an international phrase book of all the common witterings in Knightmare. For instance, the obvious ones:

"Ooh... nasty!"
"Warning, team!"
"Truth accepted / falsehood"
"Spellcasting"
"My calling name is..."

To those that are more obscure or more series-specific:

"Treguard! Is too difficult!"
"Look upon Mogdred and quail"
"I am a proverbial monk; I collect proverbs."

So. Question time:

(1) What other phrases should be in the phrase book?
(2) Can anyone provide any translations?*
(3) Am I completely insane for attempting this?

* Intended languages include French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, Greek, Polish, Czech and Russian... and that's just for starters.

1. "Oh dear, what a pity, never mind..."

"Folly is my name, and Folly is my nature, confusion is my character and fun my alma mater."

"Loo-tings and pill-a-gings!"

"Face me or perish. Please me or depart in ignorance."

"You miserable, misbegotten dogsbottom!"

"Push off, faceache!"

"Heh heh heh heh! LUVLY!" (Apologies to Ricky Temple for stealing his favourite catchphrase.)

2. Not me.

3. Yes. Utterly. ;)

This needs to be the first entry in the Norwegian, Swedish and Danish phrasebooks.

Equally, the Italian phrasebook should kick off with some quote from Ridolfo.

Should we attempt a Chinese version? Ah Wok wouldn't want to be left out...

And let us through."

Indeed :o

There are a few free translators online that could give some idea of what it will look like I suppose!

This is an example of "Oh Dear, What a Pity, Never mind!" as a free English to German Translation

"Ach Liebster, Was ein Erbarmen, Bedenkt Nie!"

Was taken from this website:

http://www.freetranslation.com/

they have an English to Norweigen so you could test how accurate it is!

Is Sly's "'Ands, like feet only without boots on" worth including? He did say it a lot in Series 8...
