We could use an off-topic forum.

Post by zzt »

You know, a forum where the talk doesn't have to have to deal with Knightmare... but it can be talked about. It's just that pretty much anything can be talked about on the forum I'm proposing... at least, anything that's within TalkKnightmare's rules and regulations. What do you all think of this ide?

Thanks for your question, but that would not be possible mainly for two reasons:

1) It's a Knightmare forum
2) It would cost more in bandwidth

The off topic forum is only one click away. ;D

It's not that difficult to sign up on off topic and bookmark that, if that's too much effort then you obviously don't need one that badly. Face it this forum is full enough with just KM topics, and the off topic is full of off topic. Merging the two would be large, expensive and fairly fruitless.

I doubt it would cost anything significant.

Erm looking at my own web-hosting company bandwidth is expensive if you have to buy more...
Our bandwidth starts at just £2.50 per 1,000mb (1 GB). Extra bandwidth gets cheaper the more you buy. Remember that paid for bandwidth is carried over from month to month.

Purchase 1,000mb bandwidth for £8.99 + VAT
(£8.99 + VAT per 1,000mb)

Purchase 2,000mb bandwidth for £16.50 + VAT
(£8.25 + VAT per 1,000mb)

Purchase 5,000mb bandwidth for £40 + VAT
(£8.00 + VAT per 1,000mb)

Purchase 10,000mb bandwidth for £63.50 + VAT
(£6.35 + VAT per 1,000mb)

Purchase 20,000mb bandwidth for £90 + VAT
(£4.50 + VAT per 1,000mb)

Purchase 50,000mb bandwidth for £175 + VAT
(£3.50 + VAT per 1,000mb)

Purchase 100,000mb bandwidth for £250 + VAT
(£2.50 + VAT per 1,000mb)

Beamrider, if you really want more, why don't you pay for it? Then we'll all happily agree that it doesn't cost much. Illusion provides this forum for us at his own expense and asks nothing from you in return, so show a little more appreciation!

But in any case, the whole point of opening the off-topic forum was so that the users here could meet up and talk about other stuff but still as part of the KM crowd. It'd be completely redundant setting up an off-topic board on here. As Rob said, it's easy to join the off-topic.

It's okay, HStorm. I don't expect everyone to understand how web hosting works, but The Brollachan pretty much illustrates how the costs can add up. Bandwidth is indeed costly, far more than webspace allowance. It's not like this site can run on 10MB of free webspace as it once did!

Well the thing is, I don't think an extra forum will take up much bandwidth. I do have experience with running forums and I KNOW that adding another forum is not usually an expensive thing, nor is it a difficult thing to do. This isn't a big board - and if things are that restrictive then why not get an ezboard - or better still, a free forum from www.forumer.com? I understand that a big website like knightmare.com costs a lot of money in bandwidth, I also run a couple of websites, but with all respect, as good as this forum is, its relativly low-traffic especially when compared to the website - so you could quite easily get away with running the forum part of the website on a free forum host.

Well, yes technically we could move to a free forum such as the one you suggested and that would probably solve the bandwidth/cost issue (although I've often found that free forums have some restrictions, and if not now then maybe months/years down the line).

However, personally I dislike off-topic discussion on the main forum. Hence why I previously invited someone to create and run an off-topic sister to this forum. Also I'm not keen on moving forums again as we've just settled into this one, and the hosting problems seem to have been resolved.

err... why would you want to move a forum as popular as this to some crappy free forum provider anyway?

Also with free forums, you tend to get a few or lots of popups which irritates people who don't have and browser with built in popup blocker like I do. Even if you do have such a browser, some don't seem to stop all popups. The browser I've got is really great though.

Although this is an interesting debate about forums, may I go back to the suggestion about the Off Topic forum that we ALREADY HAVE!!!

It is easy to get on, a lot easier then setting up a brand new one!

I dont understand all the hassle, are you that lazy that you cant open up an extra window?
Once again returning... and once again going just as fast!
