Hi everyone. I'm JP, from Redditch.

I loved this show as a kid and have been re-watching all the episodes again. I'm interested in doing some Knightmare themed projects so could someone please let me know who owns the copyright to things like the logo, artwork etc? Anglia TV no longer exists so was the copyright transferred to, say, ITV, Tim Child or the original artists?

I've been a software engineer for a number of years now but it's not just software Knightmare projects I'm interested in.

Hi, I'm JP. Also from Redditch.

I've a software engineer and keen pool / snooker player. I loved the show when I was a kid and have been watching them back recently. This has inspired some ideas for Knightmare projects (some software, some not software).

Could anyone let me know who owns the copyright to the content in Knightmare? The only copyright was Anglia TV who have now gone bump so has the copyright reverted to the artists, actors, Tim Child, ITV etc?

I don't want to step on anyone's toes if these projects get off the ground and I'd prefer not to rename everything just enough not to infringe copyright

Hey JP, welcome to the forum!

Looking forward to your projects! You should check out JamesUK's work, it is pretty impressive!

Enjoy your time here!

Hi JP,

That's always exciting to hear. There are a number of Knightmare-inspired projects around the place - some dormant, some living, some that have taken many years to come to fruition, but really really will do so probably this year.

Copyright is complex. The TV show, for example, includes a dramatic copyright, a literary copyright, a musical copyright, and a film/broadcast copyright (at least). The logo and theme tune obviously have their own copyrights, too, as you point out. The original hand-painted dungeon rooms also have copyrights. There are also moral rights associated with each of these.

For each such right, the right in question could originally have been owned by almost any entity (person or company) or group of entities. For example, I believe that David Rowe still owns the copyright to the hand-painted dungeon rooms, which was licensed to Tim (but don't quote me on the specifics of that).

Copyright never vanishes. So the demise of Anglia might have lead to unenforceable rights or the intellectual property rights might have been transferred/sold at some point. In the case of multiple owners, this might or might not make any difference.

With that said....

Tim has given his tacit approval for fan-based projects based on Knightmare. Provided that you don't misrepresent things, or edit/rebrand his work, I think you'll be fine.

I'd also strongly suggest that if you're planning to do something commercial, you discuss it with him first.

Ultimately, it will depend on the nature of the project. Personally, I'd suggest that you provide more details, as you might find that someone has either tried what you're planning, or is in the middle of trying to do what you're planning.

Brilliant, thanks for the info and advice. I was planning on writing to Tim as soon as I have something to demo but thought I'd check here first.

As soon as things get moving, hopefully later this year, then I'll be able to release more information and hopefully get a bit of feedback from you guys

Does that mean we can remake Knightmare ourselves ;) with different cast... or spoof it or what? :D 8)
I know someone made a funny clip on youtube with the line they're taking the hobbits to isengard. [lord of the rings] Can we really do a Knightmare version with different words? [maybe use the word bog off perhaps.] I was thinking of doing one with Pickle and a few others.Would that be allowed? I'm not sure so wanted to check this out before i started picking lines to use in it.

I'm doing Treguard's face right now. The bulging eyes one. WOW.

Does anyone have the contact details for Tim and the artist David Rowe please?

Also, who did the Knightmare theme tune?

Is there no end to Rick Wakeman's talents?

Sorry, I'm probably responding too late for it to be useful, but the Knightmare theme was composed by Ed Welch, whose others gems include the Blockbusters and original Catchphrase themes.
