Some conventions also have a sub-title, like 'KnightFest 2014: Live The Knightmare'. I can already picture the follow-up, 'KnightFest 2024: Recurring Knightmare'!

I like this, except spell it KnightFayre - looks more medieval, and closer to the programme's spelling. :)

Yes, I was just going to suggest spelling it Fayre for those very reasons! Though I mainly just like the fact that it rhymes with Knightmare. RHYMES I say!!

Maybe name it after a location within the series, instead of creating puns?

I like the idea of the venue becoming 'Knightmare Castle' for the day and spaces within the event being named after specific locations (Hugo Myatt interview, 1400, Merlin's Throne Room...or whatever) but I'm not sure a location should be the name of the convention itself...

Happy to be convinced though! (not that it really matters what I think :) )

I have to say, within Knightmare, I detest the name "Knightmare Castle". For me, it's so fourth wall breaking.

Don't I also recall this being a point of debate among fans? The name of the castle, that is?

I don't recall there being much of a debate about it, but my position is that I do find the name a bit jarring and slangy for a medieval castle.

The first time I ever came across the name 'Knightmare Castle' was a mention in a copy of the TV Times (yes, my family regularly bought the TV Times back then, but only because the Radio Times still didn't include ITV or Channel 4 listings) around the mid-stage of season 2. The name rather took me by surprise, as I always thought the castle was simply called 'The Castle Of Confusion' - not just because of Treguard's intros, but because the CITV announcer for 1988 always used that term as well.

Then I heard Treguard use the term 'Knightmare Castle' when congratulating Julian Smith's winning quest, and when I got my copy of the first Dave Morris novella a few weeks later, I found that the term was used very freely in that too, alongside 'Dunshelm', with no mention of 'The Castle Of Confusion' at all.

So I decided to just accept it. It's never bothered me greatly since that time, but even so it's still never sat all that well with me. 'Dunshelm' is preferable.

'The Castle Of Confusion' isn't really a name, kinda more of a nick name.

Wasn't the term 'Castle of Illusion' ever used? I've got in my m head it was at some point.

I must admit to always accepting KM Castle as its official name. When I was a child I just assumed the show was named after the location and have never questioned that assumption.

My earliest KM memories are S2 and the first book so as far as I'm concerned that's just what it's called, for good or bad!

I suppose i could see why you might consider it fourth wall breaking if it was a latter day nickname which somehow stuck but I've never thought of the castle as anything else. The 'castle of confusion' was always just a description to my mind.

'The Dungeon' is the specific bit of KM Castle where the quests take place so perhaps that could be used for the convention space :)

Also, the show was constantly breaking the fourth wall - indeed, its very premise rested on the interaction between worlds.

The brollachan from series 7 referred to Knightmare castle when asking Barry a question I believe and I'm sure Barry also mentioned something with regards to Knightmare castle too!

I quite like The Convention of Confusion but have a couple of concerns:

From a marketing perspective, is the meaning obviously apparent to the casual KM fan/ casual attendee? It might not be the case but are we on this forum much more familiar with the lexicon than many and so would immediately make a link to KM where others wouldn't?

It's a lot of syllables and would be abbreviated to COC. Verbally, it would become 'Cock 2014' and may attract entirely the wrong crowd. ;D
