Lord Fear - Rupert D'Armitage?

Post by Velvet »

Does anyone here think that Lord Fear might have actually been Treguard's nemesis in the books, Rupert D'Armitage? He was a little younger than Treguard, haughty and arrogant, and loved to have underlings.

Does the idea have any mileage, d'you think?

I wouldn't have thought so, no. Most obvious argument against is that d'Armitage died at the end of The Sorcerer's Isle. There is never any indication anywhere that Fear is an undead.

Character-wise, there are clear differences too. Fear may be haughty but he is also a great deal more intelligent and competent than d'Armitage, and less of a blusterer. Fear is less cowardly also, and d'Armitage was obsessed with the Normans' supposed superiority over the Anglo-Saxons, which is a distinction that Fear never referred to at any stage.

Sounds fair enough. But...

Have you seen the geezer's face? If he doesn't look like he's been dug up and pulled out I don't know who does!

But yes, you're most likely right.

Although it is conceivable that Rupert might have become more competant over the years.

I suppose what makes it clear to me that he's not Rupert is that he's adept with magic. That was one of Treguard's many advantages over Armitage.

Okay everyone, debate over. Go back to sleep ;D

Thanks to a certain bear-child, I've always struggled to see Rupert as a villainous name. ;D

There was a fanfic added to knightmare.com in March called Crossed Paths, set prior to Series 4, in which Treguard deals with an adversary called Lord de Ferres. As I read, I became convinced that he would become Lord Fear, but this didn't happen, and ultimately there was no real evidence that the author had such a connection in mind. However, the name does complement the character's threat to elves.

Hello - first post back in a while! :D

Interesting theory, but I wouldn't say that this was the case.

Rupert would indeed be older, and of higher rank having gone from being a Sergent to a Templar.

I think the writing in the scenes between Treguard and D'Armitage in The Sorcer's Isle is fantastic.

But watching the series, and reading the books I can find no link between D'Armitage and Lord Fear.

Though I've always found it a shame that D'Armitage was never made a character in the series.

It could be like Heat almost, the two great enimies tracking eachother then finally meeting as the series draws to a close.
