Anyone interested in a Knightmare game?

Post by WayneW »

Howdy..

This is actually my second Knightmare project, the first one I made on RM2000 years ago which I never actually finished, but it got some decent reviews from Knightmare fans on an old fan community years ago. I've decided to make a new Knightmare themed game, and have made some good progress so far.

I was just wondering if anyone would be interested in it on here, if so I will check in with updates and such as I make progress.

- I am using RPG Maker VX, a simple 2D engine. While I was willing to learn a 3D engine for it, I am more of a fan of 2D games, gives them more of a retro feel, so I decided to stick with 2D.

- The game will not be combat based, progression will be via puzzles, riddles, clues and special items - Knightmare.

- "The only way is onward, there is no turning back." the quote from Knightmare also applies to the game, therefore, rooms must be searched thoroughly before progressing, failure to do so could prove fatal.

I am still working on the story, but basically:

---
Set in Knightmare Castle. Treguard has just guided you into the Dungeon, yet "something" happens causing a disruption within the castle, throwing the entire castle into the Knightmare Dungeon.

Unfortunately for you, you have no idea what has happened and land in the Dungeon as normal where you meet Folly. ( I preferred Folly to Motley, but don't worry Motley will pop up later ;) ) Folly then gives you your first story and a game "chase the maiden" in which you have to deliver a bouqet to a maiden within the Labyrinth. Of course, with both you and Folly unsure as to what has just happened in the real world...

The Dungeon, nicknamed "The Labyrinth" within the game, has a tendency to shift between phases whenever you advance to the next level via the wellway. You soon find out as you advance to level 2 what fate has in store for you and those in Knightmare Castle at the time, and what caused it...

---

Some details about the game:

- No combat as I said, however, RMVX' battle system has been used in the event you choose the wrong door. Of course, you can't win these battles and they are simply a "creative demise" provoking the "oooh, nasty..." game ending.

- Equippable weapons include a woodcutters axe, which enables you to cut down trees that will block your path, elemental swords, which work in the same sense as the woodcutters axe except they take out the opposing elements, and much more are in development. It is crucial to listen to clues in the taverns as to which elements and which items may aid you during your quest...

- Life Force is present despite the lack of combat. this is because if you get a question wrong in a riddle, you will lose 1 stroke of lifeforce. You begin the game with 3, so 3 questions wrong is game over. Of course, Golden Apples exist around the dungeon and perhaps in some shops, they fully restore your lifeforce, as will various other objects throughout the dungeon as you progress. You may also encounter rare items which increase your life force, which may be essential for later levels of the dungeon...

- Riddles come in different forms. Some riddles come with multiple choice answers, yet for others, you may need to pay attention to numbers or letters scattered around the dungeon in order to spell out a password or spellcast. Only by carefully examining all your surroundings will you be able to do this. Other riddles that are given may require you to type in a word rather than multiple choice. Both are relativley similar and have the same functions.

- Silver is your currency, and is required for you to by items you may need to aid your quest, such as clue items for a dungeon dweller, elemental items to further your quest or food to sustain your life force. Of course, silver can also be used to bribe your way past certain places...

- Traps exist throughout the dungeon to hinder your progress. From simple floor traps that damage your life force, to more complex traps that can kill you instantly. Be sure to look around with your eyes before you move around just to make sure that you know your surroundings.

Using equipment found on your quest can open the portcullis to the next location and win you secret items...

Various riddle systems include password input and number sequences...

Fight fire with fire...? Perhaps, pay careful attention to advice to find out how to win the battle of the elements and progress on with your quest.

The way ahead is blockes, perhaps completing a puzzle can open the way ahead?

A cast of characters will aid you as much as they can, yet you have to use wit and guile to maneuver your way through the labyrinth...

Sometimes, sheer luck is the only thing that can guide you through a labyrinth. Follow any directions possible, and be sure not to step off the edge...

Information given to you at any point during the level may be crucial throughout. Perhaps it would be wise to note down any puzzles, riddles or clues given to you throughout the level...

Or you may find yourself at your quest's end...

Comments and feedback welcomed, I am going to continue working on the project even if interest is low, it is somewhat of a personal project that I am willing to share. :)

I give influence credit of course to Knightmare, but for gameplay style I was influenced by Golden Axe Warrior on the old Sega Master System. I like to think of the project as a puzzle/mindgame/dungeon crawler of sorts.

Project is coming along nicely. I have switched to a different and more flexible engine. Should have a demo version out shortly - watch this space!

Few things to note:

Changed the title of the game from Knightmare Labyrinth to Krypt, wich is the title of one of my novels based around Knightmare. Instead of basing it directly around Knightmare and a Dungeoneer, I have eliminated all introductory segments about Treguard, and instead, the character now wakes up with no knowledge of his surroundings or why he is thre - instead of being told, he will gain his memory and his purpose back as he travels the dungeon.
