What exactly is 'NuWho' or 'NuHu' etc?

Post by Kieran »

Ok, of course I am fully aware it stands for 'New Who', presumably refering to the post 2005 incarnation.

But what I have never quite undertood is the way it is written. 'Nu' instead of 'New'? Is there a reason behind this, or is it just part of fan branding that has become the norm?

Just seems a really odd branding of it, to me, like the 'New' has to sound...trendy? Or something like that. Or the 'Hu' because it is somehow different to the original 'Who'?

To me, of course, I tend not to make such a variation between the whole 63-89 and the 05-now versions. It's just 'the current series' in reference to what is on now, and 'the rest' to...the rest, ala 63-2009.

So, what's the 'Nu' all about?

I think it's "Nu-Who" á la "Nu-Metal"; that is to say, something that has grown out of something else, but is similar enough to draw comparisons with, yet is more accessible to a wider audience.

It's trendy post modernism and an attempt to appear "hip" and "with it", to be "down" with the vernacular of "the street", as it were.

To me, nu implies both new in an American accent (presumably it was first used in the US, for the various nu music genres) and nouveau.

Or maybe it's short for nutritious.
