Don't forget that the dungeoneers weren't allowed to wear anything green or blue, because it would interfere with the bluescreen chromakey! Many people probably chose red because it would be properly visible against the blue screen.
I once walked onto the bluescreen exhibit at the museum of Photography, Film and Television wearing a blue t-shirt - on the monitor, you could see right through my torso!

That's very true, perhaps we should investigate the number of teams that have failed whilst wearing a red shirt and the do a failure whilst wearing a red shirt:sucess whilst wearing a red shirt ratio, with some kind of statistical test to prove significance and whether the results accured by chance.
Or am I reading into this too much?!

So what would have happened if they wore green? Would they have dissappeared also or turned a funny colour?
